USA, 1970s
A vintage Eames soft pad armchair upholstered in classic black leather and black Alexander Girard woven hopsack. The armchair features low-back with a lightweight aluminum frame. It has a 4-star
base, a swivel mechanism, and a fixed seat height. An extension of the Aluminum Group chairs designed in 1958 for the Irwin Miller home, the Soft Pad Group repeats the structure of the earlier
chairs, adding cushions to the seat and back. These cushions in leather and fabric transformed the spare character of the Aluminum Group into a luxurious version for homes and offices. The soft
pad group is wonderfully comfortable, strong, yet lightweight. The leather cushions are soft and comfortable to sit in. Sleek, sophisticated, and beautifully simple. Made by Herman Miller.
This design is still in production- new retail for this chair in black leather is $3020.
CONDITION NOTES: the aluminum arms and base are in excellent condition considering age. Left arm has a small 1/4" circular area on the inside / underside of
the arm where the plastic finish over the aluminum is worn- see photo. It is hard to see. Left arm has a small rubbed area at the front of the arm- very slight. The leather and black hopsack
upholstery is also in very good condition, with no rips or tears. It has attractive creasing.
Note: Since taking the photos, we have added casters to the base; if you prefer glides as pictured in the photos, we can swap the casters out for 4 original glides.
